Week 5

 Hello parents,

Sorry I haven't posted in awhile, last week I wasn't well. But I am SO impressed with how the children worked so hard while I was away.We have been so busy with so much fun and exciting learning.

I hope you had a lovely Mothers Day and were spoilt with love, a cuddle or maybe even a breakfast in bed. The children were so excited to share their special card and bag and can't wait to see the Mums of IC wearing the latest fashion accessory (bag) made by your child.

Morning Drop Off

I have noticed that some children are feeling unsettled in the morning. I am thinking that having so many adults in the room could be contributing to this. Could you please kiss and drop your child at the door to help with this. If you really do need to come in and talk to me please feel free if not I would really appreciate you dropping at the door to help some children with the transition to school in the morning.

Sun Chimes - STEM Project (Monday Week 6)

Today we began our integrated science and design technology to design and create a sun chime as a part of our unit in Science related to what we have been learning about sound and light.  The children will work in collaborative teams of three to plan and design a sun chime (a mixture of a wind chime and a sun catcher) - a collaborative piece that creates relaxing sounds and reflects light.  Your child may have come home demanding materials today in their excitement about our project that we introduced and started to plan today but never fear that we have plenty of recycled materials at school.  However, your child is welcome to bring to school any other materials that you have in your home that they feel would create lovely sound or light and that we may have limited numbers of. Items may include: bottle tops, thin craft wire, buttons, gemstones, old sunglasses, old CDs, unused keys, screws and bolts, old spoons and forks, mirror mosaic tiles etc. If they could bring it to school in a small ziplock bag or similar with their name clearly labelled on it, it would clearly help with the design and construction process over the next week.

We are planning on making the sun chimes on Monday the 24th of May between 2:15pm and 2:50pm 24th of May.  If you are able to help in any way, we would love you to come in to get on the hot glue gun/ thread some beads!  Please email me if you are interested in being a Parent Helper.

Below are some of the examples that I will be showing them:

Reading books and homework

Please remember to continue completing the reading logs so that we don't double up and your child ends up with a book they have already read.  We also ask that you continue to put their homework folder in their schoolbag each day but in particular on Fridays and Wednesdays as these are change over days.  Please read the previous blog post in regards to new homework fluency grids and the next set of focus spelling words coming home next week.  We really appreciate the effort you make each night or morning to work with your child as this relates directly to our concepts at school.  We understand how hard it is to fit it in so please feel free to skip those hectic particular days of the week we all seem to have or just create a system that works best for you and your child.

Mathematics

For the last fortnight we have been learning about Time. For the last two weeks we have really put our mathematician brains to the test and learn all about telling time. This can be a tricky concept, but we are determined to get there, it is expected in Year One that students are able to read o'clock and half past times on an analogue clock and digital clock and be able to write these times as well.  πŸ•€ We are moving onto learning about chance and whether situations or events are unlikely, likely, certain or impossible!

We are finishing up our narratives writing unit, learning about a story mountain and all of the parts we find within a good story.  We learnt about what real authors to do write a story and had a go at writing our very own Awesome Adventure story. We are moving on now to Information Reports. This week we are talking about the difference between a Fact and Opinion.

Book Fair for 2021 πŸ“šπŸ“—πŸ“•πŸ“˜πŸ“™

The lovely Mrs. Kemp is holding the annual Scholastic Book fair for 2021 in our school Library tomorrow and Wednesday (18th and 19th of May). We hope to sell a lot of books and posters to raise money for our school and there is less emphasis on small toys that often end up as land fill.

Homework

Today you should have recieved the new homework for the fortnight. Please note that there will be two fluency grids again (one will focus on the ow, oa words and the other on igh, y words).  Feel free to work on both each night or alternate on busy nights.  Both of these reading fluency lists will always correlate with the spelling list (which contains four focus spelling graphemes and four tricky words).

Just a reminder that Reading Comprehension packs are due back to the library every Tuesday and new sets will be given out on Wednesdays.  Please feel free to return the books anybday in the homework folder box any morning and I will ensure they are added to the Comprehension trolley for Mrs Kemp on Tuesday mornings.

I think that's it for now - phew!
Thank you for your continued assistance and support.  Please email me if you have any further questions
